Reactivity: Mapping Thresholds Before Adding Distance
A reactive dog is not a project to be fixed with better commands. Before any training protocol is worth applying, there is a more fundamental question: how close does a trigger have to get before your dog's stress response takes over? That distance, and the zone around it, is where training actually begins.
Understanding threshold is not theoretical work. It is the practical first step that determines whether everything else you attempt will hold or collapse under pressure.
What "Threshold" Actually Means for a Reactive Dog
Threshold is not a vague metaphor for how sensitive a dog is. It is a specific functional state. Below threshold, your dog perceives a trigger and remains capable of processing information: taking food, responding to cues, orienting back to you. Above threshold, the stress response has taken over. The dog is no longer learning. It is reacting.
Most reactive dogs exist in a middle zone when near their triggers. At threshold means the dog is tense, hyper-focused, and barely functional. The dog might still take a treat, reluctantly. It might technically sit when cued, but the performance is hollow. The attention is elsewhere. This is not the same as being under threshold, where the dog notices the trigger and then returns to baseline. At-threshold is the edge. One small increase in intensity and the dog crosses.

Approaching threshold: posture changes first. The body stiffens. The gaze locks onto the trigger. The dog stops scanning the environment and narrows focus. Treats may be accepted but with less enthusiasm. The leash tightens. These signals often appear and disappear quickly outdoors, especially when owners are focused on navigation rather than observation.
Watch for calming signals in this zone: yawning at an odd moment, lip licking, a sudden exaggerated sniff of the ground. These are not random behaviors. They are self-regulatory attempts, and they tend to appear just before the situation deteriorates.
Over threshold: barking, lunging, spinning, hackles raised, hard stare. The dog is not hearing you at this point. Calling its name produces nothing. A treat held at its nose may be ignored entirely. The arousal has passed the point where outside input can compete with what the nervous system is producing on its own.
Why Distance Is the First Variable to Map (Not Commands)
The default response when a dog starts reacting is to give a command. Sit. Watch me. Leave it. This makes intuitive sense. The dog knows those words. But if the dog is at or over threshold, commands do not land the way they do in calm practice sessions. Not because the dog is being defiant, but because the cognitive state that allows for cue-response behavior is not fully available.
Distance solves a different problem. It gives the nervous system room to operate. At sufficient distance from a trigger, the dog can think. At insufficient distance, commands are asking for output the dog cannot currently produce.
The first question for a reactive dog is not "what should I ask my dog to do near this trigger?" It is "how far away does my dog need to be from this trigger to still be trainable?" That answer is the working distance. Everything else builds from there.
Building a Threshold Map Before You Train
A threshold map does not require special equipment or formal protocols. It requires consistent, deliberate observation.
Choose one trigger type to start: other dogs, deer, ATVs, large trucks on the highway, cattle along a fence line. Go to a location where you can control distance. A pasture with long sight lines, a ranch road where you can see what is coming, an open field near a county road. Rural settings in West Texas and the Hill Country have a natural advantage here. Start at a distance where your dog is clearly under threshold. Then move slowly closer, watching for early signs. Note the distance where the body first stiffens or the gaze locks. Do this on multiple days and with multiple exposures of the same trigger type. Threshold is not fixed. It shifts depending on arousal level going into the session, how much the dog has slept, whether anything stressful happened earlier that day. A dog that held together at fifty feet on a quiet morning may not manage that same distance after a high-arousal car ride. The map is a range, not a single number.
When Adding Distance Makes Sense (and When It Doesn't)
Distance works when you are using it proactively: positioning the dog at a known working distance before the trigger appears, moving away before threshold is reached, creating enough space for the nervous system to stay functional. This is deliberate management, not avoidance.
Distance does not help once the dog is already over threshold. Increasing distance after the dog has erupted into full reactivity does not undo the arousal spike. The dog needs to return to baseline on its own terms. Waiting it out in a calm location is more useful than movement at that point.
Distance also does not help when the trigger is unpredictable in timing or direction. Deer appearing at a pasture fence can move fast. A truck cresting a hill gives little warning. In these cases, managing the environment, the route, or the time of day becomes more important than any specific distance calculation.
The goal is not to keep the dog permanently at 200 feet from other dogs. It is to start at a distance where success is consistent, build a reliable calm response, and then very gradually decrease that distance over weeks and months. That is systematic desensitization. It is deliberate and slow. It works.
Reactivity and Hill Country Context
