The dog learns the route and follows it partly on autopilot. Reversing direction, starting from a different point, or taking the first turn at a different moment reveals how much the dog is following the path versus following the handler.

A third mistake is skipping loose-leash work in favor of heel work before the dog has a reliable walk. Heel is a specific positional behavior. Loose-leash walking is the foundation beneath it. If a dog pulls constantly and also struggles to maintain heel position, addressing loose-leash walking first produces faster and more durable progress on both.
